Five ways Mindfulness can make you a better creator
Adopt a beginner mindset
The “beginner's mindset” is a Buddhist principle, means starting fresh, assuming nothing, and living the question. While approaching a new design challenge all that’s required is openness and receptivity.
2. Practice radical acceptance
Accepting the world as it is requires a willingness to sit with uncomfortable truths and to see problems from all angles before solving them. By accepting a situation, you’re able to design a better approach from a place of non-resistance.
3. Drop your ego
Mindfulness teaches us that the ego, that demands to be “right”, is not our true self. I’ve realised that ego can slow the process down but we can learn how to set it aside: inviting users to share their feedbacks without the fear of hurting anyone else’s but as a practice of openness.
4. Listen deeply
In The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle says that when you practice judgement-free listening, you’re giving another person the power of your presence. Here, every project starts with listening. Listening elevates the voices of the people we are designing for and ensures that your dreams and worries are our starting point.
5. Meditate in order to create
Tolle suggests that when you want to be creative, you should go back and forth between breathing and the task at hand every few minutes. Only when you’re clear-headed can you make. By making mindfulness a regular part of my design practice, I’ve not only become a better designer, but hopefully a kinder, more patient, and more empathetic person.
It’s been a journey well worth taking.
Action can be so much more impactful when it’s grounded in reality and driven by clear intentions.
“I invite you to open your mind into new avenues of being, to develop fascination with inquiry. I observe people and look more deeply into them. Show me your iridescent colours, your beauty; let me dig deeply with self-forged tools in order to know them in a sacred way. Knowing that this is the Earth's way too, and all beings: the captivating biology of movement involved with the pace of modern technology.”
